Blog for week three
This quote found in the Gita is saying that it's better to be yourself and follow your rules then to be some one your not and fit in. This quote relates to Holden perfectly, he is the kind of person who doesn't follow the expected way to be a teenager. He is suppose to do good in school and go to college. That's what I feel like teenagers are expected to do. Holden does not conform to what society says he is suppose to be like. In the book this reminds me of the part where Holden is talking to Spenser about going school and his future. He talks about how he doesn't really care about what he is going to do in the future with school and other things. If I was Holden I would definitely be worried about school and my future. Another part where he seems like he doesn't care is when he is talking to Spencer about life being a game. ""Game, my ass. Some game. If you get on the side where all the hot-shots are, then it's a game, all right- I'll admit that." (Salinger8) I think he knows the so called rules but just doesn't want to play by those rules. I think that this quote goes way beyond this book and Holden. We should try to incorporate this quote in our lives in many ways. We should not conform to societies views of us, but live as yourself. There are some exceptions to this quote however. We can't go around making all our own rules, we still have to live by the "enforced rules".
After looking and reading this quote in the Gita I thought I woukd look in the bible to try and find a verse that would related to Holden. 1corinthians 13:11 says, "When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me". This quote reminded me of Holden in many ways. Holden doesn't know when to be a child and when to act like an adult. He should learn from this verse. He should try to put his childish ways behind him if he wants to be an adult, but if he wants to be a child still it's ok. I do t think it's bad that Holden is childish, I just think it's bad that he is so immature though. I still think every adult has a little bit of a child still in them.

Chapters 8-11
After reading these chapters I saw many points where Holden was "Shooting The crap around". One example of this is when he is on the subway and he is talking with a lady who happens to be Ernies mother. Holden talks about how great Ernie is as a person and that he is pretty popular. "Then I really started chucking the old crap around....she shook her head. I had her in a trance, like. I really did." When he talks about shooting the crap around it doesn't sound like a new thing he does. You can tell he does this a lot because he lies a lot. He also lied to the mother about his name and that he had a brain cancer. Another time in these chapters I found Holden shooting around the crap when he is talking to those three girls at that night club thing. He talks about how 2 girls are really ugly but he goes up to them and acts like they are just so pretty and amazing people. "I started giving three witches at the next table the eye again....I'm not kidding, they were three real morons." He says all this stuff and yet he wants to dance with them. I don't understand why he can't be himself and not lie about everything.

After reading chapter 5 my emotions and feeling towards Holden changed a little. After hearing his story about his brother Allie, I felt really bad for Holden. When he talks about his brother he seems to have more emotion and seems to talk "more adult" like then childish. Because when he talks about pretty much anything else he us very childish but, he can talk about Allie forever. He wrote that one paper just about that glove and he got really in to it and was proud of it, till Stradlater told him that his paper was suppose to be about something else. I can't even imagine anything like this happening to any one of my brothers or sister it would be horrible. I don't know how Holden can deal with it. In someways I feel as if some of the reason Holden doesn't care if he is failing school or he is a bad kid because of the death of his brother. I think that when Allie was alive he had someone to live for and he wanted Allie to look up to him and since he died he has lost the fact that he should be a role model. An example of this is when Holden is taking about Allie and he mentions that when he was playing golf Allie was watching him from a distance. "and he was sitting there, about a hundred and fifty yards behind me, watching me tee off." This quote shows that Allie wanted to be like his brother and looked up to him.

Blog over chapters 2-4 :)
After reading chapters 2,3 and 4 I have learned many things about Holden, the main character. To me Holden is like many teenagers now a days. He is not like the teens that always strive for their best or always wanting to learn. He is your "bad boy" rebellious type of teen. He likes to do what he wants and not care about what other think he should do. He also lies a lot and swears many many times. An example of that is in the third chapter he says this, "IM THE MOST terrific liar you ever saw on your life. It's awful.if I'm on my way to the store buy a magazine, even, and somebody asks where I'm going, I'm liable to say I'm going to the opera." This quote also shows that he doesn't take things seriously and doesn't care about things. When reading these chapters I found his personality to be kind of snotty and rude. Many times in these chapters he is very mean to people, he isn't afraid to say his opinion. "besides that he had a lot of pimples. Not just on his forehead and on his chin, like most guys, but all over his face. And not only that, he had a terrible personality. He was sort of a nasty guy. I wasn't too crazy about him, to tell you the truth."
I think I pass judgement on Holden because I think he brings a lot of things upon himself. He could be a good kid if he didn't smoke, mess around, and tried in school. He could like many other students stay in one school try hard and graduate. That's why I don't sympathize with him very much. I empathize only a little because I know that being a teenager is hard. It's not always fun learning and trying hard in school, it gets boring and tiring. But I think that you have to know when to start caring, which I don't think Holden knows that yet. "Do you feel absolutely no concern for your future, boy?" "Oh I feel some concern for my future, all right. Sure,Sure, I do," I thought about it for a minute. "But not too much, I guess. Not too much I guess."
